Pride of Baghdad

Things become a bit serious this week when Dad and I read Vertigo's Pride of Baghdad.

 This is not the Lion King and we end up discussing man's inhumanity of man, the nature of war, and American misadventures in the Middle East more than the artwork this week. 

We discuss a little bit of character point of few and give much love to BVK and Niko Henrichon'd breathtaking artwork.

Dad eats a treat in front of me and we wrap things up in a very typical manner

Old Man Logan

Patrick and Dad are back on the beat with a run of comics that Patrick has wanted Dad to read for around three years the 2008 run of Old Man Logan.  Originally published as an eight-issue storyline in the Wolverine ongoing series by writer Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven.  The book is a tour de force of Marvel multiverse madness with tons of gore and claw popping action.  Folks, Dad gets this one, he rolls with it, close the shop and end the show.  The treat was Easter based apple pie coated in walnuts and raisins.Next Week:  Pride of Baghdad

Outcast Book 1

Patrick loses about 40 minutes with of podcast, in which you could have heard some real gold about Dad talking about exercises, demons, the afterlife and the current state of mental health in America.  Instead, we hustle to record a brief recap of a truly amazing book.  Sorry, Andy.  The treat was some lame donuts that neither of us enjoyed.  Not a banner episode.

The Flash: The Human Race

We return after a long battle with technical issues.  Dad has some thoughts on hand waving comics book science while we dig into Grant Morrison and Mark Millar's last arc on Wally West Era Flash. 

Dad gets a crash course in Wally West, Barry Allen, and Jay Garrick from Patrick as the discuss if these issues are a true homage to Silver Age comics or Bronze Age comics. 

Emails of different sorts are read and movie theatre rules and regulations are debated to wrap the episode up.

Black Panther A Nation Under Our Feet

This week is a struggle session in which we have a massive battle to dissect and interpret Ta-Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze Black Panther relaunch. Patrick loves the ideas in the book but cannot string together any of the factions.  Dad has issues with the muddy line work and coloring as well as too much mysticism mixed with technology? Patrick tells a Pulitzer winner how to write and Dad tells an artist how to draw, plus we eat bad apple pie.  Next Week:  One Punch Man

One Punch Man

This week we return to manga with One Punch Man.  Dad does not understand Dragon Ball Z, youth culture in general.  Patrick also reveals that he may not understand Dragon Ball Z nor youth culture much.  Dad yearns for backgrounds on any and all monsters.  The boys wrap things up with what makes a day old donut great and birthday cakes.  Patrick cannot find the comic for next week and complains about the Michigan library sharing system.   Next Week: The Flash the Human Race

DC: The New Frontier Vol 2

Less heavy lifting from Patrick as Dad understands more of  Darwyn Cooke’s 2004 mini-series retelling the Silver Age origins of DC  comic book heroes.  We both love the Flash in this comic though.  We eat too many fritters and discuss proper Paczki with prunes and or cream filling. DC: The New Frontier Vol 1

This week we read DC: The New Frontier, which is an Eisner, Harvey and Shuster Award-winning six-issue comic book limited series written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke, and published by DC Comics in 2004.  Lotta heavy lifting from Patrick as Dad had very little interest in Darwyn Cooke’s 2004 mini-series retelling the Silver Age origins of DC  comic book heroes.  We both love Wonder Woman in this comic though. Treat this week is a bit of homemade chicken noodle soup. Next Week: Vol 2

The Wicked + The Divine

Back to the deep and dark recesses of confusion and Dad has many issues reading the first few issues of Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s The Wicked + The Divine.  We read some emails and discuss being sick.  Dad explains how little he understands of contemporary kinds of music and general pop culture.  The treat this week is De La Rosa Mazapan

We Stand On Guard

This week we explore future water wars and American / Canadian relations with Brian K Vaughan and Steve Skroce created miniseries We Stand On Guard.from Image Comics.  Patrick is lukewarm on the story and does not know what this is playing at in the end.  Dad thinks is all about a fight for resources.  Both are bowled over by the cinematic artwork and clean storytelling.  The treat this week is Smuckers crustless peanut butter sandwiches.

JSA Liberty Files

Dad and Patrick begin their quest of tearing through comics suggested by listeners in the year 2017.  First up is JLA Liberty Files.  Earth 40 of the DC multiverse in which the JSA superheroes are top secret agents fighting against Axis forces.  

Things go very poorly as Dad does not understand much of the comic book or he had one too many brownies and is lost deep, deep in the weeds.

Blacksad A Silent Hell

Patrick and Dad revisit the wonderful world of Blacksad.  At some point, things just turn into Jazz as father and son attempt to make sense of this anthropomorphic adventure of private detective John Blacksad in 1950s New Orleans during Mardi Gras.  Voodoo, confidence men, seedy drug dens, and jazz clubs are presented as a hardboiled family crime thriller with a Disney sheen.

JLA: New World Order

Dad and Patrick head deep back into DC comics with Grant Morrison and artist Howard Porter's inaugural run on JLA with the four-issue arc featuring very 1990s supervillains and some very cool Batman moments.   Dad has questions about what age Wonder Woman is supposed to be in this series and why is Batman running around in the daylight?  Patrick makes a good mincemeat pie filling but an awful crust.

Dad and Patrick dive into Jason Aaron and Roland Boschi bring about a bloody take on the manger story with the Punisher "protecting" a mafia Don, his wife, and an unborn child from three vile Wise Men on a mission to wipe them out. 

Dad and Patrick also discuss email and gifts from listeners and why mincemeat pie is one of the greatest foods on Earth.
